A Baltic Sea holiday on Rügen Island, spent relaxing in a waterfront hotel, gazing at the beach from the balcony, or strolling along the Strandpromenade, could cost more than the average vacationer's pocketbook can handle. But Hotel Am Meer offers all the above and more -- deluxe spa, unique and delightful architecture, and high-end service -- all at a mid-range price.
The hotel has 60 rooms and suites, most of which face the Baltic Sea. Luxury is in the detail, the service and the philosophy of Hotel am Meer, not in the price. Room rates start at 80 Euros a night, and the hotel offers a wide variety of packages, some including meals or spa services.
All packages include the following special services, among others:
Renovated in the mid-1990s, the Hotel Am Meer has an exterior that glistens in steely cool, while the interior is all colorful spirit. Just as with the hotel's service, much of the design's success lies in the details.
Guests soon come to feel there must be an enchanting surprise waiting around every corner, and usually they are correct. A giant azure aquarium runs the length of the lobby; the hotel rooms feature porthole windows that tip at their mid-points when opened; and the Blue Moon Lounge, which doubles as an art gallery, is capped by a lighted dome.
Perhaps most alluring are the 4 guest room floors, each of which is painted a different color that represents 1 of 4 elements: water (blue), earth (green), fire (red) and sky (yellow). A different wood finish, such as zebra wood or bleached oak, details each floor and, in combination with the bright colors, creates a distinctive atmosphere.
Some rooms have angled skylights, brightly painted recessed walls, or a loft with a pearly white spiral stairwell between levels. All have balconies, most of which have a splendid view of the Baltic Sea, the beach, and the Strandpromenade.
Walk a few steps along a sandy path from the hotel to the beach at Binz. Strandkorbs (beach cabana-like chairs with storage and shading apparatus) are plentiful and rent for around 8 Euros a day. Before entering a particular beach, note that each beach has its own set of rules (such as "no dogs" or "clothing optional," for example). It is prudent to check out the signs at each beach entrance before settling in anywhere.
The Strandpromenade, 4 kilometres long and lined with trees and hedges, is a popular place for people-watching and exercise. It runs alongside the Hotel Am Meer, past other hotels, beaches and restaurants.
Hotel Am Meer's Vitality Spa has a mile-long list of services and a well-stocked fitness centre to boot. The hotel has 2 fine restaurants plus the Blue Cafe/piano bar, as well as a lounge, for those who desire a more casual experience.
